Group 2's post
What do you think about the article? Do you believe that we should tip?
I think that we should tip for good service and be generous when tipping instead of being stingy. I feel that the customers that give pathetic tips are very selfish because I think that the waiters or waitress deserved those tips.
Yes I believe that we should tip but not occasionally as there are some waiters or waitresses giving bad services. We should give tips when they deserve it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Should 10% service charge be abolished?
It should be abolished if singaporeans is used to giving tips. If not i think that if the 10% service charge abolished is very unfair to the waiter or waitress.
You think that singapore can grow a culture of tipping?
Yes i think it is possible if some singaporeans take the initiative to tip and other singaporeans will follow.
Would you tip for service if there is no service charge?
Yes, if i think that the waiters or waitresses deserved it because some of them don't give us good service or even very baddddddddddddd service.
I think that we should tip accordingly to how good the service is!
1)Observe the waiter or waitresses.
2) See what service they give.
3)Think about how much they deserve.
4)Check if u have enough money.
5)See if they pay attention to your orders.

I think tipping should apply to those waiters or waitress that are really good(outstanding) in their services. This encouraged them to treat their job more seriously.

I feel that tipping shold only be done if the services provided are good, however I do not think that tipping is a must, and it does not have to be part of the culture. I think that people should have the choice whether or not to tip.

We tip our 'servers' as a way of thanking them for good service rendered. There is already compulsory service charges in Singapore and thus, i personally feel that tipping is not needed. If tipping is compulsory, we sometimes might leave a very low tip, or no tip at all, as a signal that the service is not up to standard, and thus, the 'servers' might feel demoralised.

I think that we should choose whether if we want to tip the waiters or not. If the services provided is very good, we can leave some tips to thanks them for the good service. If the services is not up to our standard, then we can choose not to tip. I feel that tipping is not a compulsory thing.

i feel that tipping is an encouragement to those hardworking waitresses & waiters because they work so hard to support their family, tipping them for their good services is a form of encouragement to them, encouraging them to provide even better services.
i feel that a 10% service charge, in one way or another is ridiculous. why should we pay for bad services ? in certain restaurants, services are not good but yet we still need to pay . however, if th services is really good, paying more than 10 % service charge is not a problem .
therefore i feel that 10% service charge should be abolished if singaporeans are willing to give tips to those good services ( instead of being stingy, & don't want to tip )

i think we should tip those waiters who did very good. For that will encourage them to do better next time. They help us, we need to give them tip for thanks. However i think that we also have the right to indoctrinate those waiters who have the bad attitudes.Anyway we need to choose the right person to give the tip. And giving tip to those who did very well is actually a good thing.

For me,tipping is to show appreciation for the waiter and/or waitress, that they have done a good job serving us,and by tipping,we are encouraging them to keep up the good work and improve if possible. It also shows that we singaporeans are not selfish, and can be considerate too. However,if the services are poor and the waiter and/or waitress have a very poor and negative attitude,we can choose not to tip them as we can say they do not deserve it.But,the people nowadays are more educated and i believe, that we can tip upon good services.

I think that we should promote tipping in singapore, as this shows we are satisfied with the service provided as well recongnising the good service provided. However, as tipping is being encouraged here, we should also know that as diners we pay service charge, we should not pay tips when the service charge contributes 10% of our total cost of dining. We should only pay tips only when this encourages services to make a improvement. Hence overall, i think that we should only give tips when good services are provided.

In my opinion, I think that tipping is something good. It shows that we appreciate and satisfied their good service, encouraging them to do their job better. For the 10% service charge, it should not be demolished as most Singaporeans are still not used to tipping yet, but the service has to good too. Paying 10% service charge for a bad service is totally not worth at all.
In conclusion, tipping is a good way of showing encouragement for only those providing GOOD SERVICE.

Not many people in Singapore are giving tips. However, in my view, giving tips acts as a motivation for the waiters. This enables them to work harder in the service industry to serve us better.
March 6, 2010 at 6:26 AM
I guess most customers give tips simply because it is a form of showing that they are satisfied with the waiters's service. In addition, tipping should be practised in Singapore as it can be one of the method used to encourage better services for everyone.
March 6, 2010 at 11:29 PM
Tipping is not a practice that Singaporeans cultivate. However, if one is satisfied with what service is received, then i think it is only fair that they tip them. Tipping can be a way of motivating them, to work more efficiently and diligently. Therefore, if Singaporeans start to give tips, then i think the service charges should then be abolished.

I feel that we should tip the waiter/waitress if their service is good enough . But Singapore already have compulsory service charges so it does not matter whether we tip them or not . If we like their services alot , we can tip them off as a way of thanks . If their attitude is bad and their service sucks , we should not tip them as it is just a waste of money .
March 7, 2010 at 6:28 AM
I think that tipping the waiter/waitress when their service is good can be done as it will encourage them to serve other customers even better. However, if tipping become a must, waiter/waitress will not find a need to provide good service as no matter how they treat their customers, they will still get tips. The service charges are already made compulsory, thus, i think that extra tips should only be given for really good services.
March 9, 2010 at 7:28 AM
I feel that tipping waiters/waitresses is a kind of recognition that they have done a great job of serving. If tipping were to become a must, many will not tip as there is already a compulsory service charges.Hence i feel that tipping is only required when there is an excellent service.
March 12, 2010 at 8:22 PM
I think that tipping is not a compulsory issue. If the waitresses or waiters do not serve you up to your standards, you should not tip them, as that might cause them to think that the way they are carelessly serving you is the right thing to do or perhaps they would think that it does not matter, as long as they get a tip it's fine, and that would be a misconception. However if their services are excellent, you should not be stingy and just give them the amount they deserve, as that might boost their spirits or perhaps give them moral support, and they'd be more willing to give better treatment to their future customers.

In my opinion,i feel that it is perfectly alright to give a token as an appreciation for a good service rendered. It showed that the customer is gracious and appreciative.
Also,by allowing tipping which varies in accordance with service level, the service provider gets a sense of accountability and personal connection with the customer.
However,i would like to emphasize that one should TIP only if one is satisfied with the service - this is what a group of eateries has promised customers, having done away with service charge in favour of a strict tipping policy.
In conclusion, i suppose a voluntary "token of appreciate" for extraordinary service is ok, but, please, let's never go to u.s.-style tipping which is just a way of extracting more money from customers. It's not a "tip" because it’s virtually mandatory and just a way of camouflaging the real price of the meal from customers. let the restaurant owner pay their staff a decent wage and not blackmail the customers into doing it.

I thinking tipping will make the waiters and waitresses feel that their efforts puting into the work is worth encouragement. So that they will create a better dining environment for the customers.I think singaporean should be more generous in giving tips to good services
March 23, 2010 at 4:26 AM
I feel that we should give tips to the waiter/waitress if they have done a good job in their service. The tips is a form of reward which will encourage them to do better in their service. By tipping them, customers will receive better services from the waiter/waitress.
March 23, 2010 at 6:22 AM
I feel that we should only tip them if their service and attitude is extraordinary and if there is no 'Service Charge.' If 'service charge' is present, tipping them would be paying it twice.

I feel that tipping is a good way to motivate workers t work harder for extra pay. It is a good way to let them go all out for the job

I think that tipping is way to show the waiters or waitresses that they have done a satisfying job. It motivates them to work harder and thus their services will become better.

I think that we should tip if we want to. If we do not feel that the waiters or waitresses deserve to get tips, we should not give tips. Tipping is not common in Singapore, that is why the workers do not usually expect to get tips, therefore, we should try not to tip them unless they really deserve it.
March 24, 2010 at 7:54 PM
I feel that tipping is a way to encourage the workers to work harder. It is a way to tell the workers that you are satisfied with their work. However, from my point of view, I feel that we should only tip when the attitude and the service given by the waiters are really good.

I think that tipping the waiter is a good way to tell them that they are good and encourage them

Tipping is a good way to tell the waiter that he has provided us with a good service. It encourages them to provide the other customers with good service too. Prithvi

tipping would be a great way to show that a waiter has served you well and you're happy about it and you want to show that he/she has served you well. if you are happy, give and they are happy. everyone is happy and peace abounds. nah. it actually tells them "excellent. keep up the good work" so they can do so literally
March 25, 2010 at 2:11 AM
I feel that tipping should be encouraged only if the waiter/waitress has excellent or outstanding service. This will inspire other waiters/waitresses to strive to provide good service. When this is achieved, the 10% service charge can be abolished.
March 25, 2010 at 6:33 AM
I feel that tipping is absolutely important because it will benefit the waiter who is working so hard . Tipping will also make waiters to provide better services .

I think that tipping someone will motivate and encourage the person to do better the next time he or she serve someone . 10% service charge should be taken off , as we should only pay if we receive good service from the person who serves us :) !
